Cycling in the Royal Borough

Hey! You’re not alone.

There are 8,000 cyclists living and working in Kensington and Chelsea. And every year, the number seems to spiral. Upwards.

Let’s keep with the statistics:

We know 5% of Borough residents cycle regularly. In London, around half a million journeys are made by bicycle – every day. Three quarters made during the week – 10% to school, with Park Walk in Chelsea having the highest proportion of pupils cycling to school, 14% cycling regularly.

So what have we been doing?

The Council is working hard to improve conditions for cyclists. In the past year, we’ve:

resurfaced and widened the Grand Union Canal towpath, the path alongside Holland Park and the path through Brompton Cemetery

opened some key one-way streets to two-way cycling to help improve the cycle network

installed over 500 new cycle parking spaces

worked with Transport for London to provide 40 cycle hire docking stations and a new cycle superhighway crossing Chelsea Bridge

CARMA

It stands for Cycle Awareness Raising and Marketing. And because we want to do our bit to reduce carbon emissions in the Borough, we’re taking part in this EU funded cycle project. We’re introducing targeted cycle campaigns along with five other likeminded EU cities: Riga, Budapest, Parma, Eindhoven and Goteborg.

With our roads getting congested and our public transport network running at capacity, we believe cycling offers a great opportunity to transport an ever-growing population.

For this reason, we’ll be working with residents, schools and people working in the Borough to support and encourage cycling.

Our bikeminded.org campaign runs from 2010 to 2013. During this time, we’ll be running exciting campaigns and events to get people onto a bike.
