On your bike – for £20 a month

Anyone living, working or studying in the borough can now take advantage of an innovative new cycle scheme which recently started in Kensington and Chelsea.

Hire to Buyer’ helps people take up cycling by offering them a brand new bike and accessories, plus at least one session with a qualified cycling instructor, for just £20 per month.

People who sign up to the scheme hire a brand new bike for up to £20 per month and then continue the monthly payments until they either decide that cycling’s not for them and return it, or the value of the bike has been paid off and it becomes their own to keep.

Those taking part also receive a full cycle skills training package as part of the scheme, free of charge and tailored to the rider’s ability. A personal cycle training instructor will support the rider and create a bespoke program to help them overcome any difficulties and enjoy cycling with confidence.

Cat, who works in the borough, joined the scheme in November 2017: “I signed up to the scheme as an affordable alternative to buying a bike. I only really use a bike to commute to and from work but it is a lengthy cycle, so I needed a bike which is both comfortable and reliable. Choosing the type of bike to suit my needs and the correct size was very easy using the website, and after entering some wrong details by accident, the company got in touch within minutes to check my order.”

“Peddle My Wheels also offer to help maintain the bike, which is perfect for me as I have little experience of doing even basic upkeep! Not only that, but they offered to help sell my old bike for me too.”

“Alfy, who dropped off the bike to me, was friendly and helpful and has been ever since via email – if I’ve ever emailed him with a problem he has got back to me straight away. The bike itself is great quality and very comfortable.”

“As part of the scheme I was required to complete a two-hour council-led course in cycling safety, which was arranged around my schedule and really informative.”

“I’d recommend the scheme to anybody – it’s so much cheaper than tube travel!”

Anthony, a Kensington and Chelsea resident who joined in December, said: “I used to cycle to work every day on the ‘Boris bikes’ until my office moved from Victoria to Kings Cross and it became too far. Then I heard about Peddle My Wheels and it seemed like a really simple and low commitment way to get back into cycling.”

“The process was really simple and they organised everything including insurance, delivery, a bike lock and even a free cycle skills lesson. Last week I cycled to work and back on four out of five days – it takes about as long as the tube but feels so much better (and it’s cheaper!).”
