Tips for cycling in the rain… is your bike ready?

03/11/2011

So winter is just around the corner now and we can’t escape the rain storms and ever worsening cold (can you tell we’re not fans of winter?). But is your bike ready for this change of seasons? And how should we adapt our ride style to the rain?

We’ve asked Director of Bikeworks, and expert mechanic, Jim Blakemore for some advice.

1.The road surface will be the slickest just after the rain has begun. During this time the rain will cause the oil buildup in the pavement to rise to the surface, causing the road surface to essentially become a giant oil slick. This is when you need to take extra care. Never brake or corner in the center of the road at intersections, as this is where cars leave the majority of their drippings. At this time, it’s good to notice metal surfaces such as manhole covers, or wet leaves, as they can become slippery.

2.As fun as it may be to splash through puddles, they’re best avoided. That puddle could be hiding a pothole, which won’t do your wheel any favours.

3. Check your brake pads. If they are wearing down then now is the time to replace them. And remember that your braking time slows in the wet so give yourself a bit of extra time.

4. Oil that chain. Water and metal don’t mix so make sure you oil your chain regularly to avoid it rusting up.
